I’m on a flight from Phoenix to Nashville. I’ve spent the last hour or so talking to guy; who works for Holley.; He saw me looking at Rod; and Custom magazine, and he asked me if I liked old cars.; The conversation went on for a while.
I was flipping through the pages of the magazine when I saw a page dedicated to honoring young car builders.; This month’s; award went to Donny Starck–the guy who built my car. How cool is that?; I buy a car on eBay, and here I; am seeing; my; world wrapped; into the pages of magazines.
I’ve been involved in magazines since I; was 18, when I worked for YOU! Magazine in Los Angeles. After the Real World, I’ve been in a lot of teen magazines. Then came a rush of; Christian magazines. I never thought somehow I’d be connected with a car magazine. I have a feeling this will be happening more often.
This kind of stuff means so much to me. It’s not about fame or notoriety, but; it’s about engaging the world around you. I lived most of my life in rural America where nothing ever happened. And now, I am out where everything; is happening. I can make a difference.
That’s why I want to start a magazine for Life Teen. Once version2 of lifeteen.com is kicking butt, that’ll be my next project. Bring it on!

Tonight I went to a concert with Fr. Cyprian. He is a monk, a priest, and a musician. His music really challenged me. As his concert was starting, I thought about leaving because I was not entertained. But the more I listened to his unique voice, his guitar, and they dude on the drums, the more interested I was in staying.
He told stories of of the Buddhist monks, mystics, and prophets he’s met around the world. After listening to him for an hour, I couldn’t help but feel caged by the consumer world.; I buy, therefore I am.
I’ve always prided myself in being artsy, but this guy is really artsy.; He’s almost in another world, and I think I want to go there. Monks are happy for a reason. They are at peace. I don’t know if I want to go live on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere, but I think I should at least do it every now and then.

Tonight President Bush and Senator Kerry debated at Arizona State University in Tempe. (Here in Arizona.) This is the second time the president has been here in the past couple months.
He stays at a hotel that is right next to the studio where I work, so a day at the office involves driving through security. It’s so exciting to get stopped by guys in suits and sunglasses. I tell them I have to get in to go to work, and they flag me through like I was a senator.
Tonight there were all kinds of rallies and protests around town. It was exciting to being in the middle of all the freedom of speech, even though I don’t agree with half of ‘em. It’s wartime and it’s an election year, so people’s emotions are high.
I can hardly believe anything I hear on the news. Their job is to keep us tuned in, so they are constantly convincing us the race is close, and the hour-to-hour events can change everything. It’s interesting that media only briefly mentioned when Bush was up by 11%. But once it was cut down to 10%, it was “The President is losing his lead…”
Yuck. I am involved in politics, but it is so dirty. I saw politics in action when I was on the Road Rules Challenge. We were all trying not to get voted off, and things did get dirty. I just can’t listen to the presidential candidates the same way as I did before the show. It’s not that I can’t support them, but I know that the mud always flies.
:::
I wanted to get a room at the President’s hotel, but they buy up the whole place. I actually called for a room last time to make reservations. I just think it would be so cool to have Secret Service pound on my door and yell, “Hey you guys pipe down in there! The President’s trying to get some sleep!”

I am in love with being productive. I love seizing the day. I love being tired after a long day. I love it!
I love the challenge of trying to get as much quality; work done in as little time as possible. No screwing around–just get it done. Today, I designed a darn cool T-shirt in forty-five minutes. Done!; Soon there will be fifty kids walking around with a hip shirt from their retreat. Efficiency is cool.
It’s not about seeing how much you can do in a day, but how much you can do in your whole life. Because that’s all life is, a series of days. So when you wake up each morning; determined to have an awesome day, that will give you an awesome life.
I was listening news on the radio earlier this week, and they were talking about the creators of Dreamworks. They’re in some big and scary business deal, and the news commentator brought it all together with one line: “These guys are billionaires for a reason. They know how to take the right chances.” I love that! I want to be one of them!
My ambition is not to become a billionaire on earth, but to be a billionaire in heaven. Yeah it would be cool to be that rich, but it would be even cooler to be someone like Mother Teresa. She didn’t have a dime, but, just like the billionaires, she knew how to take the right chances. She risked everything for God.

Last night I had another nightmare about The Road Rules Challenge. Most of my nightmares about going on another show have to do with me not being prepared, like I wake up in the middle of filming the show. Last night’s nightmare was me hanging out with my friends, then slowly I noticed more people from Road Rules and Real World mingling in. Before you know it, MTV decided to start filming a show.
We had these ridiculous competitions, like see who can run on their tippy toes the longest. One competition kept changing, and I had know idea how to win. It started out as us trying to swim out to these decoy ducks in a lake, then it changed into us flying above the ducks and trying to fall on top of them. I was so frustrated, I woke up in an anxiety attack.
On a lighter note, I got to catch up with some of the camera crew from ‘The Real World’ during the dream. I forget his name in real life, but I recognized his face, his walk, everything about him. It felt good to catch up with him. The Director of Photography in the dream was the DOP from The Real World. I forget his name, but he was an intimidating guy in real life. In my dream, he was sitting on top of the water, staring through the camera lens at lowly me on the shore, unable to walk on water.
It’s ironic, because in real life, the camera crew on the MTV reality shows play a big role in the lives of the cast. They are always in your house, in your life, and in your face. They affected our behavior, but the world never saw them on the show.
I am glad it’s all over. I enjoyed my time on MTV, but I really enjoy my life now.
