New Modern in Arcadia

Several years ago I spotted a “for sale by owner” sign in front of a cool modern home in Arcadia probably built in the early 1960s. The real estate market was white hot at the time, and I knew the home might get torn down to make room for a palace. This bothered me because the mid-century modern homes are the most visible and livable old homes in Phoenix. I called the homeowner and discovered that the house was in fact built by a well known Arizona architect (Beadle?) many years ago.  I also found out that the home was out of my price range, so if the home would be restored it would have to be done by someone with more money. Within a couple of months the home was sold and a construction fence soon went up.

The photos you are looking at below are of that old home became. It has some styling inspired by the mid-century modern homes, but doesn’t stay confined by the original home’s lines. It’s better looking and more livable than ever. (And now it’s definitely out of my price range.) I’m sharing the photos here on my blog mostly because I like looking at ‘em.

On Sunday morning John and I made a trip to Elephant Mountain in the Superstition Wilderness near Gold Canyon, Arizona. It was a bizarre journey through the wild west. I’ll let the photos tell the story.

Yesterday morning Candyce, Norah, and I joined our friend Megan and Brad to celebrate the news that the two are now engaged. I took a few photos to remember our morning together.

Later in the afternoon, I went to the Chandler Car show and snapped some photos of my favorite rides. After you click on each photo, you’ll see my thoughts about the car beneath.

President Obama’s Visit to My Neighborhood

Arizona, Daily Life No Comments »

Yesterday President Obama made a trip to Arizona to promote his ideas for cleaning up the mess of American housing at Dobson High School, which is less than a mile from my office and just across the street from my church, St. Timothy.

Many of the people in the community came to the church to pray for the president and for our nation. We are such a politicized society that it is hard for anyone to believe there was no agenda behind the prayer service. Well you know what, we prayed for George W. Bush through an 8-year administration. Why would we not pray for Barack Obama? Do you know who else we pray for? World leaders. Local leaders. And for the people that they lead. That’s what Christians do–we pray for peace and justice.

I snapped some photos from the morning, including a few shots of the new grass they put in around Dobson High School to impress the president…

Light Rail to Downtown, Palatte, Lux

Arizona, Daily Life No Comments »

Yesterday afternoon Candyce, Norah, and I took the Light Rail downtown with Howard and Sharon (Candyce’s grandparents.) This was our first trip on the much-hyped public transit system that stretches from Mesa to Tempe to Phoenix. Here are some snapshots from the day.
